Eco-Friendly Sneakers

Last year I made a commitment to purchase sustainable, ethical gear so I have been on the hunt for sneakers that fit the bill.

I was actually surprised by how few options are out there, but I did find a handful of wonderful gems:

For everyday / training

Veja - these sneaks are so swoon-worthy that you can pick up a pair at Barney's. This Brazilian company uses sustainable materials and tout radical transparency. These sneaks, for instance, are made from: B-mesh (made from upcycled plastic bottles), synthetic leather, wild rubber, organic cotton and polyurethane.

AllBirds -  Made from ZQ Certified Merino* or responsibly grown and sustainably harvested eucalyptus pulp, bottle laces, castor oil insoles and boxed up in recycled packaging, these trainers are a sustainably-minded girl's dream. *This certification ensures that their wool meets the highest standards of farming, land management, and animal welfare.

Adidas x Parley - Adidas teamed up with Parley for the Oceans to create a line of shoes (and gear) that uses "yarn made from recycled waste, intercepted from beaches and coastal communities before it reaches the ocean."

vivobarefoot - these non-shoe, shoes are incredible. They have both vegan and made-from-recycled-bottle options and they are very lightweight, making them ideal for travel.

Reebok Cotton + Corn - Reebok released the first β€œ75% USDA certified bio-based shoe.” The upper shoe is made from 100% cotton and the soles are constructed out of corn. They are also packaged with recycled materials.

For running

Brooks - from product materials to fair labor to community initiatives, Brooks has put much care into creating a sustainable and ethical running shoe. They have outlined each of their initiatives thoroughly here. I absolutely love my Brooks, they are well-designed, comfortable and make me feel super speedy ;)
