A Mother's Love - A Loving Kindness Meditation

The immensity of the love I have for my daughter is truly remarkable. It has been one of my favorite things about becoming a mother. Recently, I have been tapping into this motherly love in my meditation practice. What has come to be is a really lovely loving kindness practice that I would like to share with you.

Here’s what my practice looks like:

  1. Find a comfortable place to sit, either cross legged or in a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground.

  2. Close your eyes (you can keep them open a slit if you are baby minding) and straighten your spine.

  3. Begin to inhale and exhale deeply, paying attention to your breath and the sensations in your body and nothing else.

  4. Once you have settled into the breath, after about 10 deep breaths, think about your baby or someone who you love in a tremendous way. Notice how you feel as you think about this person. I usually feel warm, cozy and radiant.

  5. Continue to breathe deeply, begin to imagine this immense love extending towards yourself. Continue sending yourself love for 10 breath cycles.

  6. Now imagine sending this love to your partner, your parents, your family. Continue sending them tremendous love for 10 breath cycles.

  7. Now imagine sending this love to your community, to other parents, to local business owners. Continue sending them tremendous love for 10 breath cycles.

  8. Next, imagine sending this love to someone who you have a challenging relationship with. Continue sending them tremendous love for 10 breath cycles.

  9. Lastyly, imagine sending this love to every person in the world.Continue sending them tremendous love for 10 breath cycles.
