7 Ways to Relax at the End of the Day That Aren't Wine

I like wine, I drink wine, I drank several glasses of wine this week. I also think that the narrative floating around that mamas need wine to unwind after a long day of caregiving and / or working is problematic. Alcohol can actually be detrimental to attempts to recharge your batteries.

How exactly?


After 2 glasses of wine, I usually feel dehydrated, have digestive issues, feel bloated, don’t feel as rested after a night’s sleep and about 7 out of 10 times develop a migraine - not the effects I am looking for when looking for a way to unwind at the end of a particularly rough day.

I’ve decided to do my own version of Dry January and give up wine for a month to opt for other, more relaxing activities. When studied, volunteers who participated in one Dry January study reported feeling more healthy, losing weight, feeling accomplished and more. Not a bad start to the year, eh?

Here are a few ways that I plan to relax after this month’s long days, sans wine:

  1. Restorative yoga - restorative yoga is amazing. You basically just lay down for an hour and feel exponentially better. I love the digital yoga classes on Glo for when I can’t get out of the house.

  2. Enjoy a warm cup of tea. Here is a list of my favorite organic teas.

  3. Enjoy a long dinner with a friend. As often as I can, I like to disconnect from my phone and social media and go to dinner with a friend. Even if it’s just downstairs while the baby sleeps upstairs.

  4. Read a fiction novel. There’s something about a good fiction novel that helps me just escape from the tensions of the day-to-day. I’m currently reading Shantaram and it is amazing.

  5. Take a long warm bath. I like to fill up the bath tub add some himalayan bath salts, turn on some classical music, light a candle or two and let the stress from the day melt away.
