The Best Non-Toxic Yoga Mats
If you didn’t put a lot of thought into your purchase, there is a good chance that your yoga mat is made from PVC, which could be exposing you to toxins (sorry). For instance, according to the NIH exposure to PVC probably also means exposure to Phthalates, which may disrupt reproduction and development and could be a cause of cancer. There are also environmental implications.
Working out should be something that improves your life, not something that exposes you and your family to scary toxins.
The good news is that there are so many beautiful, high-quality non-toxic yoga mat options out there.
Here are 5 high-quality yoga mats made with eco-friendly materials that will put your mind at ease about bringing toxins into your home.
The Jade Harmony is my personal favorite mat. I use it at home and when I head into the studio for a yoga class. The grip is incredible and Jade is a phenomenal company. Jade mats are made from natural rubber tapped from rubber trees, contain no PVC, EVA or other synthetic rubber, and are made in the United States. They also plant a tree for every mat sold!
My other favorite mat is the Manduka eKO Superlite. I talk about this mat all the time because it is the perfect portable mat. You can fold it up and put it in a large purse or backpack and it is the perfect mat for travel. If you want a bit more cushion, check out the rest of Manduka’s eKO line.
Not only are Yellow Willow Yoga mats made from a micro-fibre suede made from recycled plastic bottles and natural biodegradable tree rubber with no latex, silicone, toxic glue, PVC or phthalates, they are also gorgeous.
The Basically Perfect Cork Yoga Mat is made from organic cork and tree rubber and is free of phthalates, PVC, TPE, foam, and adhesives.
The Prana Indigena Natural Yoga Mat Prana has a deep commitment to sustainability and their mats are no exception. These mats are made from two layers of biodegradable, non-Amazon harvested tree rubber.
note: there are some eco-friendly yoga mats made from PER available. In my research, I found a few reasons to believe that these may not be as non-toxic as they say, therefore they are not included here.
